SUMMARY:Odd Pages Book Club: Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova
DESCRIPTION:In honor of spooky season\, we are adding a dash of horror to our odd pages. Join us as we read and discuss Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. (Just a little touch of Frankenstein.) \nMONDAY\, OCTOBER 26TH\n7 – 8 PM\n5330 MECHACA RD\, AUSTIN\, TX 78745\nBYOC (bring your own chair) \nBook club titles receive 10% off at checkout. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not have to have finished the book to participate in the discussion\, but we will be discussing spoilers. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nGrieving mother Magos cuts out a piece of her deceased eleven-year-old son Santiago’s lung. Acting on fierce maternal instinct and the dubious logic of an old folktale\, she nurtures the lung until it gains sentience\, growing into the carnivorous little Monstrilio she keeps hidden within the walls of her family’s decaying Mexico City estate. Eventually\, Monstrilio begins to resemble the Santiago he once was\, but his innate impulses―though curbed by his biological and chosen family’s communal care―threaten to destroy this fragile second chance at life. \nA thought-provoking meditation on grief\, acceptance\, and the monstrous sides of love and loyalty\, Gerardo Sámano Córdova blends bold imagination and evocative prose with deep emotional rigor. Told in four acts that span the globe from Brooklyn to Berlin\, Monstrilio offers\, with uncanny clarity\, a cathartic and precise portrait of being human. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nGerardo Sámano Córdova is a writer and artist from Mexico City\, where he currently resides. He holds an MFA in Fiction from the University of Michigan. He has studied with Alexander Chee at Bread Loaf as a work/study scholar\, and with Garth Greenwell at Tin House. His work has appeared in Ninth Letter\, Passages North\, and Chicago Quarterly Review\, and is forthcoming in The Common.

SUMMARY:Odd Pages Book Club: The Botany of Madness by Leon Engler
DESCRIPTION:Welcome back to the odd pages! Our first book of 2027 is The Botany of Madness by Leon Engler (translated by Alexandra Roesch). This pick is a little unusual\, because instead of looking at the content of the story\, we are exploring the strange form of autofiction\, or autobiographical fiction. \nMONDAY\, JANUARY 25TH\n7 – 8 PM\n5330 MECHACA RD\, AUSTIN\, TX 78745\nBYOC (bring your own chair) \nBook club titles receive 10% off at checkout. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not have to have finished the book to participate in the discussion\, but we will be discussing spoilers. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nA young man is gripped by one fear: that he’ll lose his mind. In his family\, mental illness has shaped lives for generations\, and time in psychiatric wards has become almost a rite of passage. His battle to avoid inheriting his grandmother’s suicidal behavior\, his mother’s bipolar disorder\, or his father’s bouts with alcoholism and depression spurs him to flee Germany for New York\, via Paris and Vienna\, only to end up in just the kind of mental institution that so terrified him. But he works there as a psychologist rather than undergo treatment as a patient himself\, and learns that a person is always more than a diagnosis. In this picaresque novel\, a potent blend of memoir and fiction\, the protagonist is forced to confront the question he has avoided all his life: What is normal? \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLeon Engler grew up in Munich and studied theater\, film\, and psychology in Vienna\, Paris\, and Berlin. He has published several plays and short stories and works as an author\, psychologist\, and lecturer in psychology and creative writing. Botany of Madness is his first novel. \nAlexandra Roesch has translated twelve works of fiction and nonfiction including writings by Hans Fallada\, Seraina Kobler\, and Stefanie vor Schulte\, and has been awarded the inaugural John Calder Translation Prize. She holds an MA in translation from the University of Bristol. \nSee you in the odd pages!
