SUMMARY:Author Event: Donna Dechen Birdwell
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 9th at 5:00pm as we welcome local author Donna Birdwell to Reverie Books for her upcoming novel of historical fiction The Disenchantment of Narcissa Tarver. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and all ages are welcome! \nABOUT THE BOOK: Narcissa Tarver wants to be someone who matters\, someone like her celebrated older brother Duncan. Caught between generations in her sprawling rural family as it struggles to preserve privilege in post-Reconstruction Mississippi\, Narcissa is relegated to the care of an adolescent Black girl and regaled with stories of haints and witches. As she realizes the power of written words\, her ambition to be a newspaper reporter intersects in disturbing ways with Duncan’s shady politics. Narcissa will have to choose between devotion to family and fidelity to the truths she uncovers. Hers is a story of disappointments\, conflicted loyalties\, and a search for identity in a changing world where questioning white supremacy and male dominance can get a girl in a mess of trouble. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Donna Birdwell is an anthropologist who turned her skill toward fiction writing a decade ago; she is now the author of nine books. The Disenchantment of Narcissa Tarver is her first work of historical fiction and her most personal novel\, incorporating as it does some of the history of her own family. Most of Birdwell’s previous work is speculative fiction\, including the award-winning Song of All Songs\, published in 2020. She is a third generation Texan and has made Austin her home since 2009.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 11th from noon – 4:00pm we will be joining fabulous local and independent bookstores\, vendors\, and authors at Austin Beerwork’s Fall Bookfair\, a throwback event for all ages. Everyone has such fond memories of the Scholastic Book Fair coming to their elementary school and the brewers want to recreate that experience. It won’t be the same as seeing the silver shelves rolling down your school hallway or flipping through the catalog\, but they hope to get pretty close. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and all ages are welcome!

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Shop: Queer Film Theory 101
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 16\, 2025\n 7:30 PM 9:00 PM \nThe Highball (map)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, October 16 at 7:30pm\, we will be at The Highball\, celebrating our favorite scream queens with Queer Film Theory 101! One of the best parts of scary movies is the trope (or commentary thereupon) of the beautiful\, chaste woman who makes it out alive. But not before she is tortured mercilessly and practices her most authentic vocal reaction to all the horrors being inflicted around her! \nWe queers love Halloween time\, and we love a Scream Queen. From Jamie Lee Curtis to Neve Campbell\, we celebrate the tremendous impact these characters have had on our young queer lives when we found ourselves surviving our own everyday horrors in the world and eventually finding our voices. \nSo for this one night only\, our LGBTQIA+ film “professors” will be sharing their favorite scary movie queens and discussing the influence they had on the genre\, on cinema\, and on their own little queer hearts.
