SUMMARY:Author Event: Amanda Skenandore\, author of The Medicine Woman of Galveston
DESCRIPTION:Event Timing: Saturday\, Oct. 5\, 2024 @ 1:00 PM\nHosted by Reverie Books at Captain Quackenbush’s Soundspace\n5326 Menchaca Rd\, Austin TX 78745 \nRSVP at https://forms.gle/bdW9KxBmXKjSNqqB9\n\n\nWe’re so excited to be hosting an author event with AMANDA SKENANDORE\, author of The Medicine Woman of Galveston! The event will be on Saturday\, Oct. 5\, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Captain Quackenbush’s Soundspace.\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n \n\nAmanda Skenandore is an award-winning author of novels highlighting real\, often little-known episodes of medical and public health history\, including The Nurse’s Secret\, The Undertaker’s Assistant\, Between Earth and Sky\, and the 2023 Silicon Valley Reads selection and Hoopla Book Club Pick\, The Second Life of Mirielle West. As a registered nurse\, she adds layers of detail and authenticity to her portrayals of historical medical practices as well as the experiences of patients and medical professionals. She lives in Las Vegas\, Nevada.\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\nOnce a trailblazer in the field of medicine\, Dr. Tucia Hatherley hasn’t touched a scalpel or stethoscope since she\nmade a fatal mistake in the operating theater. Instead\, she works in a corset factory\, striving to earn enough to\nsupport her disabled son. When even that livelihood is threatened\, Tucia is left with one option—to join a wily\,\ncharismatic showman named Huey and become part of his traveling medicine show.\n\nHer medical license lends the show a pretense of credibility\, but the cures and tonics Tucia is forced to peddle\nare little more than purgatives and bathwater. Loathing the duplicity\, even as she finds uneasy kinship with the\nother misfit performers\, Tucia vows to leave as soon as her debts are paid and start a new life with her son—if\nHuey will ever let her go.\n\nWhen the show reaches Galveston\, Texas\, Tucia tries to break free from Huey\, only to be pulled even deeper\ninto his schemes. But there is a far greater reckoning ahead\, as a September storm becomes a devastating\nhurricane that will decimate the Gulf Coast—and challenge Tucia to recover her belief in medicine\, in the\ngoodness of others—and in herself.

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Shop: The Dark Market
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Market returns to the shadowy and magical grounds of The Butterfly Bar at The VORTEX for a special one-night only dark academia-themed market on Friday the 13th. \nDark Academia is like the soul of a forgotten library. It is like reading your favorite sad book as rain falls outside and seems like it will never end. It is like late night candlelit discussions of philosophy. It finds beauty in decay\, poetry in silence\, and meaning in melancholia. Basically it is like a Gothic Scholastic book fair for moody adults. \nReverie Books will be selling books and bookish merch. Let’s get broody!
