SUMMARY:Reverie sells books at: One Page Salon
DESCRIPTION:The One Page Salon (called “the best literary evening in town” by the Austin American-Statesman) is a monthly reading series presented by the Writers’ League of Texas.  \nFive outstanding writers – including KB Brookins\, Fernando A. Flores\, Evan Griffith\, Julie Poole\, and Deanna Roy – will read one page from a work in progress or recently published work\, which means the audience will be among the first to hear new material from our talented line-up. Plus\, there will be literary chit chat and fun & games and laughter and so much more. \nThe One Page Salon takes place on the lovely outdoor patio (weather permitting) at Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin where attendees can enjoy coffee and beer and other libations. There are some tasty food trucks if you want to pick up a bite to eat and Reverie Books will be on hand selling an assortment of great reads\, including our readers’ latest books. Your host for the evening will be WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver.

SUMMARY:Queer to Tell August 2024: Tales of Pride
DESCRIPTION:Show Date & Theme:\n \nFriday\, August 9th\, Time: TBD @ Reverie Books/Captain Quack’s. Theme: TALES OF PRIDE – Stories about the time you felt immense pride for being Queer\, in your community\, in someone you admire\, someone you mentored\, overcoming shame\, etc.\n\n\nHere are some prompts to get you brainstorming…\n \n– Write a story inspired by a photo. What is taking place in this photo? What led to this moment? What happened after?\n\n– Write a story inspired by one of the colors of the pride flag and their meanings: Red – Life\, Orange – Healing\, Yellow – Sunlight\, Green – Nature\, Blue – Harmony\, Purple – Spirit. What is a time you felt truly alive? When was a time you felt your inner child healed or began to heal? When did you first step out into the sun as your authentic self? How has the beauty of the natural world around you affected your journey? Think of a time you met someone who you were perfectly in sync with\, in perfect harmony. What was a time that you felt like you truly honored your queer spirit and those who came before you?\n\n– A person you met one night\, but have never seen again\, who changed your life. Write a story about how you met and how they impacted you.\n\n– Write a story that starts just before the climax. Lead us up that heart pounding moment and then leave us on a cliffhanger as you go back and describe how you got to this moment.\n\n\nInfo about the show:\n\nIn the show\, you will perform an autobiographical story ranging from 6 – 8 minutes (3 – 5 pages) in accordance with the theme for the evening. The form of your story can range from being stand-up comedy\, to a poetry slam\, to an essay reading. Your story should ideally focus on one true specific moment in your life\, so that the audience has a clear narrative that they can invest in. It should have a clear beginning\, middle\, and end. However\, you can tangent slightly off the main story\, if necessary\, to provide details that support the main moment. Though the story must be true\, feel free bend details if needed to help streamline the story. \nThese stories DO NOT have to be memorized\, but they should be worked on so that you are able to connect with the audience. We ask that you do have a script\, rather than an improvised story. There will be a music stand for you to put pages or an iPad on and read from should you need it. The week prior to your show\, you will workshop your story with myself to get the first time sharing jitters out and make sure you feel ready to go come showtime. If you’re unfamiliar with the form of storytelling or need some inspiration for topics and structure\, I highly recommend watching some videos from The Moth’s Mainstage playlist. The Moth is one of the leaders in teaching and presenting the artform of storytelling and is a great resource. Also\, check out the Queer To Tell Instagram for photos and videos from our previous shows. \nIn the interest of transparency\, this is not a paid opportunity. If that isn’t for you\, I totally understand. The show will be ticketed\, but all profits will go back into the event (paying for space\, photographer\, etc.). In addition\, due to time and the desire to create as diverse a lineup as possible\, not everyone who submits will be selected. However\, we do intend to continue this series and establish it as a regular event. If you aren’t selected or able to participate this time around\, please keep in touch because we would love to have you take part in the future. \nWe hope to have the show lineup complete by July 22nd\, so please fill out the form ASAP.

SUMMARY:Shams Alkamil Poetry Reading @ Captain Quackenbush's Soundspace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a poetry reading with Shams Alkamil! The poetry reading and Q&A will be on Sunday\, June 23\, at 2:00 pm at Captain Quackenbush’s Soundspace. Her newest poetry collection\, When Time Is Circular\, releases on June 15\, 2024. \nAlkamil’s new book is inspired by the movie Arrival to see “how language and the experiences of life are not linear. Rather\, they are circular.” She begins with her own birth\, but her story is far older than that\, the timeless experience of womanhood\, and in her case the discovery of her identity as a young “Black Muslimah” immigrant in America\, circling among worlds and cultures. Inevitably she encounters violence\, personally and globally (her “Ode to the Women of Palestine” has never been more necessary)\, and she writes her way through “anger\, which really was just grief with a scary mask.”
